CHARACTER INFO
Name: James Foster
Canon: Crux Fleet OC
Age: 30
Appearance: A big, heavily muscled man at 6'2", just on the edge of fat and muscular, with pale skin and scars on his cheeks. His eyes and hair are both brown, and he's got a rather doglike expression, cheerful or sad dog depending on his mood. He has massive scarring on his cheeks from having them lacerated some time ago, with a lot of pinkish scar tissue.
History: Jim is a second generation mecha pilot in Crux Fleet. His dad was a pilot of one of the first combat mecha, which was a converted asteroid miner, and who retired with full honors after 3 pitched battle engagements. He lost his brother James during fighting, and named his later-born son Jim to remember him. Jim has always carried the weight of the earlier war with him and was driven to military service, though his general good nature and thoughtful, moralistic attitudes have often put him at odds with high command, particularly Captain Hollis and Admiral Bailey, though he personally likes Captain Hollis. He's actually had fairly good relations with Urist, if only because Urist helped with the development of the Model T, and Jim constantly tinkers with his personally issued robot to make sure it is ready for action and properly tuned to his particular needs.
Jim, once he was qualified to be a pilot, began piloting the Model T robot since its first mass production release, and has fought in 5 major engagements, more than almost any surviving robot pilot in the fleet. The battle of Quix'sun, Tannhauser gate, the Maelstrom, the Butcher's block, and Hellsbreach were enough to earn him a very prestigious job as a teacher and researcher, and he mostly flies a desk now or a teacher-model dual cockpit model T where he trains younger pilots how not to die in their first engagement. He is at present a Chief Warrant officer, with flight credentials that are constantly renewed, with the understanding that he generally can't deploy on combat missions without dispensation He has been shot down 3 times, twice in the major engagements listed above, and once in a minor skirmish with space pirates. The latter caused an explosive shattering of his helmet, which tore his face and cheeks up badly, thus causing them to be badly scarred, though his exposure to vacuum was fortunately short enough and confined to his face enough that he wasn't too badly harmed otherwise before a retrieval shuttle got him.
He has also fought in 2 ground engagements, but did not distinguish himself in either one, being swept up in a larger scale battle as infantry was something that left him with significant mental trauma, and he has continued to see a therapist about his experiences as an unwilling ground pounder. The groud engagements punctuated his piloting career, but did not interfere with it, the detachment of space combat and the difference in visceral feeling apparently giving him a degree of safety that was not apparent during his groud engagements.
As a man with some free time when not teaching students, and unable to fly patrols or engage in skirmishes anymore, Jim has taken advantage of the ability to engage in continuing education to educate himself as best he can about the history of the fleet in general. He's a pretty strong academic. Outside of that he mostly just spends time in the gym, or in his office, ready to help students.
Most recently, jim has been reassigned as a flight trainer to assist any new arivees in the Confederacy, if they're willing to learn to pilot giant robots, or need retraining on the model Ts.
Canon Point: present day Crux fleet
Personality: Jim is a big, well meaning lug. Great with children or in a teaching environment, he leads by example and teaches with a friendly, companionable touch that belies his shyness outside of the classroom environment. He's very shy and retiring around women and men alike, though he can be very open almost to the point of TMI with his friends. He's initially friendly but is very quick to assume people are bored with or dislike him, to the point of almost seeming diffident with people out of fear he's boring or getting too close to them with reciprocated friendliness. Jim tends to be a bit more outgoing when drunk, which is rare, though he'll generally celebrate as much as anyone else after a big victory. He tends towards a rather kindly attitude towards children, to the point of indulgence, but he doesn't let this carry over to the classroom if he's teaching them. He can be a little thickheaded about emotional things, and so overcompensates by showing extreme goodwill towards everyone he considers a "Good person" which is basically anyone who isn't overtly killing puppies in front of him, or something similarly awful. He gives everyone the benefit of the doubt, and his first recourse is generally conversation, which makes him somewhat sad, given his profession as a soldier.
Jim has a fondness for small, nervous animals, be they dogs or whatever other odd alien beast that is doglike he may run across, and will generally go out of his way to interact with things he finds adorable.
His personality switches completely in mechanized combat, becoming a nigh-mechanical extension of his robot, all conversational style except for a few swear words and moments of startlement gone, entirely dedicated to his mission and the execution of whatever task he has been given. He more or less is a machine of war. He becomes more or less fearless, and while his analysis of the situation is always humane and designed to save maximum lives in any fight, they never include calculations designed to preserve his own if it is not combat effective to do so. His own emotions go away, though his moral compass remains.
This contrasts drastically to his reaction to battle outside of a robot, where he's a panicky, slightly whiny human who is very aware of his pink and squishy he is. He tries very hard to do what he's ordered, but he's constantly nervous and more than a little scared. He has only seen ground combat twice during his time with the fleet, and each time left him a shaking mess and required some psychiatric care afterwards.
Abilities/Powers/Skills: Jim's a fairly athletic, if somewhat overfed athletic human in his 30s, who is exceptionally skilled in robot piloting combat, has nominal if somewhat rusty ground combat skills, and the ability to teach piloting or other subjects that are military-related rather well. He's a decent mechanic as well, constantly tuning his own machine for maximum efficiency, and has become something of an expert in the fields of the history for the fleet itself. He has an uncanny ability to synchronize himself with his model T, or any other machine he pilots, and has used some of the fighters as well though he's not a qualified trainer on them.
His one Power, if it can be said to be one, is Improbable survivability. Jim has survived 5 major battles as a model T pilot, which is almost unheard of given the casualty rates. Nobody is sure if it is some undetected ability, psionic, magic, or otherwise, or if Jim has really good luck. Though he doesn't know it, this dispute about jim's ability is part of why he's been reassigned to desk duty, to see if it is simply skill at piloting that he can pass on as a trainer, or something more specific to him.
Weaknesses: none beyond human weaknesses, and some degree of psychological attachment to his robot.
